The world's largest slot gaming company has put up a record $500 million bet on Ocean Reef, a proposed 2. billion dollar casino resort that would be the first in Maryland and create thousands of jobs.

The backing from Las Vegas Sands Corp. could make or break the project, which needs zoning approval from both the local government and the state before it can move forward. Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor, has come out in strong support of the project, saying it would "bring much-needed jobs and economic development to our County."

But skeptics say that the resort – which would have a hotel, casino, spa, and other amenities – is simply too big and would cause too much traffic congestion in an area that is already heavily populated. The proposal also needs to clear a number of environmental reviews.

If approved, Ocean Reef would be the first state-licensed casino in over two years. It would join a crowded field of gaming destinations that includes Charles Town Races & Slots in West Virginia, Hollywood Casino Perryville in Maryland, and Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Delaware.
